Auckland City Council Tribute

Certificate to commemorate over 100 years of serviceIn 1997 the City Council presented the ADA with a certificate to mark over 100 years of service to the community.

The University Coup

In 1985 a group of university students from the Auckland University Debating Society took control of the Executive of the ADA. This caused a lot of ill feeling among those who had kept the ADA going "for donkey's years". Twelve years after the event, Walter Parks described the law faculty students who staged the "takeover" as "a pack of two-faced, back-stabbing shits." The ADA had been supported by lots of little clubs, but these disappeared completely in the wake of the coup.

The mystery of the auditor's signature

1984 Auditor's SignatureThe auditor's signature on the 1984 annual accounts shows clear signs of having been cut and pasted on to the balance sheet and then photocopied, leaving the tell-tale outlines. This caused great controversy at the time. The story was that if the auditor was not actually dead at the time he was supposed to have signed the accounts, he was certainly close to it and in no state to review the accounts. One fact, however, is that the same auditor signed off the 1985 annual accounts. Close examination, and a comparison with the 1985 auditor's date and signature also suggests that the 1994 February digit 2 has in fact been changed from the digit 1.

Struck-Off

In 1982 the ADA was removed from the register of incorporated societies for having failed to file annual returns since 1972. On 14 June 1985 Richard Forbes filed the financial statements for the years 1973 to 1984 with the Registrar of Incorporated Societies and the ADA was reinstated on to the register.

Quadrangular Debating Contest

From about 1977 to 1981 there was a school competition run in assosication with the Institute of Chartered Secretaries.

Sir John Allum

In 1972, the long-standing patron of the ADA, Sir John Allum, died.

Incorporation

A SGM on 31 March 1965 resolved to incorporate. The ADA was incorporated on 17th February 1966. Bruce Houlton Slane, now the Privacy Commissioner, filed the incorporation documents.

The Early Days

According to our letter head, the ADA was established in 1892. Somewhere there are letters to/from the ADA in the 1930's. The organisation faded away but was revived in the 1950's.
