2000 School Debating Seminars

Format

The purpose of the seminars is to improve the quality of school debating. They are scheduled before the start of round 1 in the hope that we can eliminate many of the common, unnecessary mistakes adjudiators pick up. To this end, the seminars will: The structure will be kept very loose, as the leaders will adapt to the particular concerns and interests of the students attending the seminar. All the seminar leaders are capable and competent to lead each seminar, but each will offer a different focus and emphasis.

If I was a competitive school debater, I would aim to attend at least two seminars if I could. While some of the basic material will be repeated (which is no bad thing) different areas and aspects will be covered at each seminar.

Students of all ages will be invited to attend. The seminars will be most useful to those who want to go beyond just having some fun, and who want to win. This will usually be older students (6th and 7th formers and some 5th formers), but in the past younger students have found the seminars to be invaluable.

We would also encourage coaches and potential adjudicators to attend for a quick refresher course, orientation to the particular emphases of ADA debating, and for the opportunity to ask questions. There is no charge for adults.

Requirements

There is a charge of $3 per head for each student attending. If a school reserves places for students and more than 20% do not show, then the school will be billed for their places.

There are a limited number of places available, so we encourage you to register in advance. If there is space left we will accept people who have not registered, but there may be no places left. This web page will be updated to list the number of places available at each seminar.

Each student should bring a pen, blank paper, and a copy of the ADA marksheet. We strongly encourage each student to think of a question they would most like to ask.

If we can arrange a seminar leader, we will run a seminar, and invite other schools to participate (so make the suggestion even if you can't reach 30 students yourself).
