Sir John Allum
The ADA acknowledges with regret that death of its Patron Sir John Allum. Sir John was not only for many years the patron of the society, but his memory will be permanently recorded through the Allum Cup which is presented to the best speaker in Robinson Cup debate each year.
Robinson Cup
An audience of about fifty persons witnessed the final of the Robinson Cup B grade debating trophy on 19 September. The debate "That Queen Street should be a pedestrian shopping mall" was affirmed by Ad Libs and negated by Lynfield College. The debate which was won by Lynfield College was perhaps unique in that a Ladies Club and a College team won their way to the final. Mr Donovan, convener of the adjudication panel, commented on the high standard of debate and said it was well up to A grade standard. It is to be hoped that both teams will stay together and contest the Athenaeum Cup next year.
Champion Memorial Trophy
Eleven contestants entered the Champion Memorial Trophy, and the judge admitted difficulty in separating the final four. However Mr Perry and Miss Stone were selected, and the final followed the Robinson Cup. Mr Perry provided a bluff and humours commentary on the quality of our parliamentarians and Miss Stone, who won the contest, gave a splendid speech on the New Zealand way of life. Undoubtedly the toughest form of Public Speaking, it was difficult to tell that the speeches given were impromptu. The contestants were given an envelope containing two subjects and were given one minute to choose a subject and prepare a 5 to 6 minute speech.
Athenaeum Cup
The final of the A grade debating championship will be contested by University and Takapuna Toastmasters. The Toastmasters club will affirm "That contraceptives should be available to persons of all ages." Due to University examinations, it will not be possible to hold the debate on the night of the Herald Cup. Instead it will provide the main item of entertainment at the Christmas Function on 23rd November. University are the present holders of the Trophy and will be extended by the Takapuna team, who are determined to inscribe their names on the cup.
Herald Trophy for Prepared Speech
The Herald Trophy is a 15 minute prepared speech contest, and the subject is of the speaker's choice. Entries are open to all comers, the heats will be held on 17th and 18th October at Leys Institute and the final will be held on 25th October at the K.S.C. Hall, 228 Ponsonby Road. It is anticipated that six contestants will go through to the finals this year. This will provide the audience the opportunity to judge the quality and style of the best entrants for themselves. It will also prevent deserving contestants from being eliminated in the heats. The closing date for entries is 13th October.
