ADA History of the New Zealand Debating Championships

1997
Bill Brimming of Auckland was runner-up in the oratory competition. Advanced Toastmasters of Auckland, representing New Zealand Toastmasters, won the prepared debating competition. The ADA team reached the semi-finals of the prepared debating. Jackie White (Auckland) was selected as a reserve for the New Zealand Debating Team, and Claire Ryan (New Zealand Toastmasters) was selected as captain of the team.

The New Zealand Debating Championships were not held
1993
The Norwood Trophy for prepared debating was won by a team including Peter Shand from Auckland. Peter Shand was selected for the New Zealand debating team and Sacha Judd was selected as a reserve. The ADA team of Richard Bright, Sacha Judd and Sally Hill reached the semi-finals and won the Elsie McComish Plate.
1992
Auckland hosted the championships. The Norwood Trophy for prepared debating was won by the Auckland team Bombay Hills 90210 of Campbell Walker, Peter Shand and Richard Bright negating "That it is better to ule in hell than to serve in heaven" against the New Zealand Universities' team. The Canterbury Cup for impromptu speaking was won by Wayne Hope. The ADA was represented by Wayne Hope, Rachel Cooney and David Fleming, who lost the finals of the Elsie McComish plate against Otago negating "That politics is the art of deviancy". Peter Shand and Campbell Walker were Aucklanders selected for the New Zealand Debating team. Penny McDonald was selected as a reserve.
1988
Auckland winners of the 1988 Norwood Trophy competition for prepared debating Gavin Logan represented Auckland in the oratory competition. Peter Shand and Sam Stubbs were Aucklanders competing in the oratory representing other organisations. Wayne Hope representing Auckland won the impromptu speaking competition. Sam Stubbs was another Aucklander competing in the impromptu speaking competition. The Auckland team of Claire Ryan, Peter Shand and Sam Stubbs won the Norwood Trophy competition. Wayne Hope and Michael Strevens represented Auckland in the impromptu debating competition and affirmed the moot "That Winston Peters should be our next Prime Minister", losing to Otago. As a result of winning both the prepared debating and the impromptu speech and being placed runner-up in the impromptu debating competition Auckland ended up as overall winners of the 1988 Championships, winning Ben's Bowl. Sam Stubbs was selected for the New Zealand Debating team. Claire Ryan was selected as a reserve.
1987
Rhema Viathianathan and Michael Strevens won the Wellington Cup for impromptu debating.
1986
Wayne Hope won the Canterbury Cup for impromptu speaking. M Green won the Protectus Cup for oratory.
1985
Athena (Elizabeth Grierson, Helen Guthrie, Wendy Brindle) represented Auckland in the Norwood Trophy. Claire Ryan, representing New Zealand Universities, reached the Norwood finals.
1984
An Auckland team of Richard Forbes, Wendy Wisbey and Michael Prouting lost against the New Zealand team. All of the ADA's representatives at the NZCDU (now NZDC) championships were from Auckland University Debating Society. They were Claire Ryan, Martin Quinn and Michael Prouting. ADA was a finalist in the Elsie McComish Plate. Arthur Stubbs was highly placed in the oratory. Auckland was a semi-finalist in the impromptu debating competition. This was one of Auckland's most successful national championships for years.

The Norwood Trophy for prepared debating was won by B. Gray, S. Bugg, P. Smith
1979
P.L. Smith won the Canterbury Cup for impromptu speaking.
1975
P.L. Smith won the Canterbury Cup for impromptu speaking.
1974
Y. Edwards won the Canterbury Cup for impromptu speaking.
1973
Pamela A. Stone won the Protectus Cup for oratory.
1971
Pamela A. Stone won the Protectus Cup for oratory.
1969
The Norwood Trophy for prepared debating was won by R. Johnson, W. Smith, P. Smith
1968
The Norwood Trophy was to be contested in Wellington by C. Smith, G. Mossman and C. Prior.
1962
The Norwood Trophy for prepared debating was won by R. Johnson, P. Smith, W. Smith
1963
The Norwood Trophy for prepared debating was won by R. Johnson, W. Smith, A. Tattersfield
1962
The Norwood Trophy for prepared debating was won by R.C. Johnson, W. Smith, P.L. Smith
