Minutes of the ADA Committee Meeting held in the Boardroom of Securitibank Ltd., Queen's Arcade, on 2nd May, 1974, at 7.30pm


Present

Messrs P. Smith (Chairman), Martin, Johnson, Kirk, Beale, Mesdames. Lowe, McKenzie, Chester. Miss Harrison.

Minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed.

Business Arising


Life Membership

Mr Kirk is still trying to contact Mr Slane.

Prison

We await further advice and information from the prison.

Mr Marin to contact ASB re cheque form signatures.

Correspondence

Inward

Wellington Speaking Union re Rostrum Trophy

It was moved and carried that we advise Wellington that owing to the heavy debating programme in Auckland that they choose a date in October or November. We contemplate that we make this debate our end of year function.

Treasurer's Report

as at 2/5/74. Balance. $1168.59.

A/c. passed for payment. $7.00 to Secretary.

Moved and carried that the secretary be given $10.00 for petty cash and be reimbursed on a monthly basis.

Sub Committee's Report

9 Athenaeum teams

17 Robinson Cup teams entered in the competition

Mrs Lowe expressed concern about the University entering 3 Athenaeum and 6 Robinson Cup teams. With so many teams from one club the possibility of a number of defaults could arise.

It was moved and carried that a copy of the ADA debating rules be sent to every club entered in each competition.

Novice Debates

Miss Harrison reported that entries for the Novice debates close on the 31st May, the draw to be made 5th, 6th or 7th of June; and suggested we send a Robinson Cup draw with the Novice debate draw to give the newcomers some idea of the subject of the Robinson Cup.

Publicity

City and West End news will publish debates and topics free of charge, if given seven days notice.

General Business

Australian Visit

Debate to take place either on 13th or 15th July.

Venue

ATI - Auckland Grammar School Hall or Concert Chamber

Moved and carried that the Chairman have power to book whichever hall he considers the best available.

Wilson & Horton

To be approached regarding publicity.

Subjects for Debate

Each person present to send Chairman three subjects.

Miss Harrison

Reported a telephone conversation with Mr Ryan (from JayCees) requiring an adjudicator for the following Tuesday night. Miss Harrison told Mr Ryan that in the interests of both JayCees and the ADA she felt that they should be affiliated to ADA and would like a ruling from the ex-committee.

Moved and carried

That Miss Harrison ring Mr Ryan and see if the JayCees would make a formal approach to the ex-committee.

Moved and carried

That Miss Harrison be appointed Honorary Liaison Officer of the ADA - and that the association continues to meet the basic rental of Liaison Officer telephone.

To be held Thursday, 6th June, at 7.30pm. 2nd Floor Queen's Arcade.
