The NZSDC Issue:

It was ascertained that there is no formal structure to the New Zealand Schools Debating Council (NZSDC). Andrew Stockley is currently President and Sacha Judd is the regional coordinator the for Auckland area. She was told that she would be part of the selection panel for the New Zealand squad at trials in Wellington. Last year her sister, Kushla tried out for the team but didn't get through. When Andrew found out that Kushla was in the Auckland squad this year, he revoked Sacha's position on the selection panel. Ex- Auckland debater, Claire Ryan has replaced her. Points raised on this matter are: We should put forward our concerns, but with no formal structure in place, there is no commitment from the NZSDC to listen to us. At this stage it is not practical to get Sacha Judd reinstated, but it should be known that we should have a direct involvement in selections and the running of selections.

NZSDC are putting forward a constitution but the ADA has still not officially been told of this.

NZSDC's selection committee is made up of 4 people with a casting vote from the president.

The NZSDC's AGM is on August 18.

Wayne asked what relationships they have with other speaking unions. Richard replied that the only relationship that he knew of was with the Wellington debating union.

A general question was raised: Should the national competition run through the unions or separately as at present? As the ADA gives tangible assistance in this area for Auckland, we should be consulted and included in preparations for this competition.

Wayne will draft a submission, cc'd to all unions. It will be ready by Tuesday.

Chaperones for Wellington:

For the sake of proprietary and for parent's peace of mind, the ADA will pay for Sacha Judd to fly down to Wellington for the national competition.

Date of flights for the Auckland squad:

Wellington decided that our squad could only fly down to Wellington on the morning of the competition. Richard proposed that we send them down the night before. Rooms have tentatively been booked for the extra night. The cost is approximately $200.

THAT the ADA pay for an economy return flight for Sacha Judd to chaperone and be available for adjudicating if called upon.

Schools survey:

Wayne will be sending out a survey to every school on topics such as how many debates they would like a year, timing for these debates, how far they are prepared to travel for a debate, etc. He is looking at preparing one competition Auckland wide with:

Schools Adjudication:

P Adams expressed concern over a debate that was lost by 2 points. She called into question the standards of adjudicators. A letter is to be written to Wayne.

Athenaeum:

Richard proposed a combined Athenaeum/Presidents Impromptu competition for early to mid August. Schools, Robinson, toastmasters and interested parties will be invited to attend. (9-10 teams). About 4 or 5 adjudicators will be needed. It will take place from 9am - 6pm. Wayne and Richard will carry on after this competition with 2 or 3 more prepared Athenaeum rounds.
