Notes for Chair of Debate

Firstly arrange tables so that the affirmative team is on the right of the chair, facing the audience.
  1. Open the meeting, welcome all present. Special welcome to the judge and any special guests
  2. State the purpose of the meeting, eg second round in ______ Cup Contest
  3. Introduce the teams
  4. State rules of contest speaking times
  5. Ascertain whether the leaders agree to interjections. Announce whether or not there will be interjections and state that these must be from the teams only and must be audible, brief and to the point
  6. Ask if there are any questions and if not state the subject of the debate and introduce the leader of the affirmative
  7. After each speaker completes await the Judge's signal and introduce the next speaker
  8. After affirmative Leader's reply fill in time with announcements until Judge is ready to announce the result and give criticisms
  9. Await word of congratulations to winning team by leader of losing team. If not spontaneous you may ask the losing team leader if they wish to say a few words.
  10. Leader of winning team should then arise and express appreciation and thank Judge, Chair and Timekeeper for their work.
  11. Invite those present to supper and close the meeting.
