Rules of Athenaeum

  1. Entry fees are $36 per team. Each team member must be a member of a club affiliated to the ADA, or an Associate member of the ADA.
  2. Each team shall consist of three speakers, the leader of a team may be either the first or the second speaker.
  3. Speaking times shall be twelve minutes for each speaker with six minute replies by each leader, the Affirmative leader having the final reply.
    Speaking times reduced to twelve minutes at SGM on 18 March 1985.
  4. There shall be a warning bell two minutes before the expiration of time, and two bells at the expiration of time for all speeches.
  5. The conduct and control of the debate shall be the responsibility of the Chair.
  6. Interjections from team members are permitted for all Athenaeum debates, unless both teams agree before the start of the debate that interjections are not permitted. It is the Chair's responsibility announce whether or not interjections between teams are permitted.

  8. Heckling is not permitted. No interjections shall be permitted during the reply speeches.
  9. The ADA marksheet shall be used for all debates.
  10. Debates must be held within the time limits fixed for each round. If this time limit is not adhered to, both teams will be considered to have defaulted.
  11. If the ADA does not set a time and place for the debate, then the teams shall agree on a time and place. The ADA shall be given at least seven day's notice so that an adjudicator can be supplied.
  12. If difficulty is experienced in arranging a fixture with an opponent, without a date being agreed by 7 days prior to the deadline date, application should be made to the ADA who will appoint a time and date on which the debate is to take place.
  13. After a debate has been arranged, the time and location settled, and the ADA informed, no change is permitted. The team which cannot keep the schedule will lose by default.
  14. All of the marksheets from the debate must be posted or faxed to the ADA within 48 hours of the debate. The winning team has the responsibility for sending in the marksheets.
  15. Unless the ADA sets a venue, it is the responsibility of the Affirmative team to provide the venue.
  16. It is the responsibility of the Negative team to provide the timekeeper.
  17. The role of Chair will be decided by mutual consent.
  18. Substitutions are acceptable for reasons of absence, sickness and such-like.
  19. Team members will be encouraged to adjudicate Robinson and school competitions.
