Former MP Michael Laws casts a giant political shadow

The most recent Laws-gates concern the employment trust that he established - a much emulated community employment model - and the Hawke's Bay Speaking Union, which he also formed. He once got a local debate telecast as a primetime TV special. ..

Also in circulation are questions about speaking union funds. Laws has heard the scuttlebutt, and says it's "bullshit and crap" that he drew out trust money to fly himself and his then secretary Louise Sampson - who looks like an exquisite Liomges shepherdess - to Auckland without authority.

"I'm sick of this sort of innuendo," Laws says fierecly. "Those accounts have been audited, and there's been no unaccounted for or improper spending."
