Auckland debaters prove champs

Auckland beat 14 teams to win the national debating championships held in Wellington during the weekend.

Seventy competitors from throughout New Zealand took part.

Bill English of Wellington won the oratory competition with a speech on the medical profession.

Wayne Hope of Auckland, with a speech on freedom, won the impromptu speaking competition.

The Auckland provincial team - Claire Ryan, Peter Shand and Sam Stubbs - won the prepared debating competition by successfully negating "that the Kiwi should waltz with Matilda".

The impromptu debating competition was won by the Otago team - cousins Roderick and Tim Mulgan - who negated the topic "that Winston Peters should be our next Prime Minister".

The New Zealand debating team to tour Australia next year was announced at the championships.

It is: John Bishop (Wellington) captain, Roderick Carr (Wellington), Virginia Goldblatt (Manwatu). Reserves: Claire Ryan (Auckland), Michael Laws (Wellingon).

The New Zealand Council of Debating Unions elected Andrew Stockley of Wellington as president for a one-year term.

He will replace Maitland Manning, who has been president for the past three years.

Vice-president is Virginia Goldblatt and secretary-treasurer is Claire Ryan.

The new executive is: Tim Mulgan (Otago), William Hayward (Canterbury), Norm Crawshaw (Westport), Iain Rennie (Wellington), Liz Clewley (Wellington), Roger Pitchforth (Manawatu), Rob Hosking (North Shore).
